The 100 MPG Hummer May Not Rate 100 MPG’s

The electric 100 miles per gallon Hummer H3 may not actually be rated at 100 miles per gallon. This makes Arnold very sad. Last week we reported on Raser Tech’s 100 MPG Electric Hummer, which is in the works with Raser’s revolutionary electric truck drive train. Nicknamed the Hummer H3 Volt, this vehicles is supposed to be rated at around 100 mpg, and contains a 268 horse power electric motor, which hooks directly to the transmission. A stand alone four-cylinder gasoline engine replaces the previous V6/V8 mods and drives a generator making electricity after about 40 miles.

But we have some bad news to report. At least for now, the H3 EV only gets around 33 MPG. According to Jalopnik: “For the first sixty miles the Raser Hummer runs in all EV mode and from there it will run on a constantly operating generator, resulting in an asymptotic decline in average fuel economy. It does get the dramatic 100 MPG fuel economy the company claims — as long as you don’t go further than 60 miles in a day. The actual, long-range economy is a less headline-grabbing 33 MPG.”

Perhaps one day we will live in a world where Terminators roll up to Hard Rock Cafe’s nationwide in completely green, electric powered (or better yet, hydrogen) Hummer variants. Until then, we have to admit – 33 MPG with an H3 is still pretty damn good!
